Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test.

For example, a blood test can be used to:

assess your general state of health

confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection

see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are functioning

A blood test involves the doctor taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm, and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface. If the doctor has told you to arrange to come in for blood tests, please check if you have to come in fasting or not. Fasting means nothing to eat or drink on the morning you are coming to have the blood drawn. You can drink water, and take your regular medication unless indicated otherwise. Most results are through within 3-5 working days.

Urine Tests

All urine samples must be presented in a sterile container that we can supply, or you can purchase from the chemist. The laboratory will not accept any other type of container.

Stool Sample Tests

If you are asked to produce stool samples, the doctor will advise whether this is a one, two or three day test. The sterile pots can be collected from reception. You will be advised how to carry out the test. Please note that samples must be kept in the fridge until you bring them into the clinic and we can only accept in the mornings between 09.00 and 12.00 noon.

When you attend for a test of any kind you will be told how long you should expect to wait for the results.
